I have to start out by saving ‘you never know where you life will take you’.
This book has been a work in progress. Over a 30 year process. I wrote this book so your gardening process doesn’t have to take you 30 years.
You can have a beautiful garden in any season and I can make it easier for you than it was for me.
If you’re a busy person, whether you work full time, have kids in every sport imaginable, or just want a quick reference book to help you sort out all the information available on gardening, this is the book for you. Whether you’re a novice or a well seasoned gardener, this is a workbook you can take with you to the garden center. Write in it, highlight what’s important to you. Make it your own. It has most of the information you need in one book. I’ve even provided a journal page or two for each topic so you can add your own information to this handy ‘take along guide’. I have set this book up so each garden type has a brief introduction. You don’t have to read an entire book to know how to get started. If you don’t know much about gardening at all, you can read several pages and have most of the basics. If you’re an experienced gardener, the plant lists are divided by topic, all in one place. There are pages that list plants by height and name for each season. If you need a short plant that blooms in spring you can easily find it. If you need a four foot tall plant to fill in a bare spot in the back of a border in autumn, you can easily find it. I’ve take the guesswork out of the process for you. I even list my favorite plants for each season with color photographs for each garden type. You can highlight the plants you want to buy on you next shopping trip, take this book and go. When you buy the plants you chose ahead of time, you’ll have the most success. Keep the grower’s tags and attach them to the journal pages for future reference. All in this easy to use workbook. You can take this all a step further. If you want deer resistant plants AND plants for the shade, all you have to do is look at both sections in this book. The plants that appear on both lists will give you the most success.
I live in an area where there is a healthy deer population. So that was my biggest gardening challenge. It has been a love-hate relationship. You can read about ‘the turning point in my garden’ in the Deer Resistant section. I wanted to have a garden that bloomed all season – in spite of the deer. I have it. If you have deer where you live – this is the book for you. If you don’t know how lucky you are. Your possibilities are endless. Either way, the list of plants by size and season is in this handy workbook. I was beacuase of the deer challenge that i have spent years researching plants that would work for me. Now they can work for you.
I became a Master Gardener, lecturer, designer, and consultant because gardening became a love, passion, and almost a form of meditation.
What began as drawback has turned into a purpose. It surprises me still how my life has taken turns over the years to get me to just this perfect point in my life. I hope the same for you.
